Hellenic News of America, August, 1998

More than a hundred Greek alumni of American Universities gathered Tuesday June 23rd, 1998 at the Roof Garden of Macedonia Palace Hotel in Thessaloniki for the first cocktail party organized by the newly founded Northern Greece Alumni Association of American Universities. Mr. Dimos Silvestriadis, graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, welcomed the new members: "The founders believe that we---the Greeks who crossed the Atlantic to enrich our knowledge and maybe to radically change our future---are brought together by the same unique experiences. We are bound by the same feelings of appreciation for the Colleges and Universities in the United States, for their teaching and research methods, for the opportunities that they gave us."

Present at the event were Mr.Paul Stephenson, Consul General of the United States in Thessaloniki, Mr. Leonidas Koudis, President of the Greek-American Chamber of Commerce in Thessaloniki, Mr. George Tsiotras, Vice-Rector of the University of Macedonia, Dr. Demetrios Doutis, Fulbright Educational Counsellor in Thessaloniki, professors from almost all the departments of the Aristotle University and the University of Macedonia and the American College of Thessaloniki, well-known businessmen, lawyers and doctors.

The founders of the Association estimate that there are about one thousand Alumni of American Universities who reside in Northern Greece. According to the Association’s Constitution, the goals of the Association are:

4. To encourage Greek students to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in the United States.
5. To establish scholarships funded from academic institutions or from independent private or public sponsors to support Greek students studying in the United States.
6. To pursue a rapid and unobstructed recognition of all academic degrees earned from accredited Higher education institutions in the United States by the Greek government.
