Dimos (Dimosthenis) Silvestriadis was born in Athens, Greece on November 6, 1970.
From his mother's side, his grandmother, Thespina, was born in the town of
Permata and his grandfather, Iordanis (Jordan), in Diner, some other town a-day-travel from Smyrni (Ismir) in Asia Minor.
From his father's side, his grandmother, Kiki, and his grandfather, Dimosthenis, were both born in a town near Ankara.
All moved to Greece in 1922 when Turkey and Greece exchanged populations.
His mother, Victoria "Vicky", was born in Thessaloniki, Greece.
His father, Christophoros, was born in Chanthi, Greece.
It is a Greek tradition to give the child the name of one of the grandparents.
Hence, Dimos was named after his grandfather, Dimosthenis.
The route of the name "Silvestriadis" is "Silvester".
Linguists say that it comes apparently from "Silvestro Pope of Rome".
No one knows what a "Silvestro" (the grand-grand father of Dimos) was doing in Ankara...
Son of a public servant, Dimos, was moving from city to city every couple of years.
After graduating from the 15th High School of Thessaloniki,
Dimos joined the student body at the
University of New Haven,
West Haven, Connecticut, USA. He completed the first year of the Engineering program and then transferred to the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Amherst, Massachusetts, USA where he studied
Economics and Management earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1994. The town of
Amherst, located in the heart of the Pioneer Valley, in Western Massachusetts, is surrounded
by Five colleges :
Amherst,
Hampshire,
Mount Holyoke,
Smith
and
UMass.
While at
UMass, Dimos initiated a number of projects including the European Databases Center (in
cooperation with the
Massachusetts Institute for Social and Economic Research),
the Five Colleges European Club and the International Fund. He was involved in faculty,
administrative and student committees. For four years, almost daily, he listened to National Public Radio (NPR) news programs. His thinking was influenced by Prof. David K. Scott, then Chancellor of UMass,
Anthony "Tony" Lake, then Five Colleges Prof. of International
Relations and latter Assistant to President Clinton for National Security Affairs (1993-1997).
Selected among his 4,000 classmates, Dimos received the
Senior Leadership Award. Working 40 hours a week all year long, Dimos self-financed 50% of his education.
After graduating from college, Dimos worked as a Research Economist at the Forecasting Center
of the prestigious
Jerome Levy Economics Institute
in Mount Kisco, New York, USA
conducting quantitative and qualitative research of current economic conditions in the US and
abroad.
The following year Dimos shifted to management consulting, joining the
Higher Education Consulting Practice of Coopers & Lybrand LLP
in New York, USA. Travelling Monday to Friday, Dimos applied Business Process Reengineering methodology to leading private and state colleges and universities
in the US.
In May 1996, Dimos returned to Greece and served in the Greek Army for 23 months as a Reserve Officer in
the Finance Corps.
In June 1998, Dimos was trained as an International Red Cross Delegate.
Dimos completed his MBA at Warwick Business School in the UK in September 1999.
During his MBA studies, he co-founded the Strategy Forum.
In the Summer of 1999, he participated in the development of 3i's,
Europe's Leading Venture Capital Company, extranet Inside Edge.
From the Fall of 1999 till the Summer of 2001,
Dimos was responsible for long range strategic planning for the European operation of UPS, a logistics company, working at UPS's European Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
In Summer 2001 he joined EDF Energy, (formerly "LE Group") in London, UK, part of Electricity de France, responsible for Business Planning for the Residential and Small Businesses unit.
In December 2001 he was promoted to Group Marketing Planning Manager leading a team of 11 in setting the targets for the three brands : London Energy, (formerly "London Electricity") SWEB Energy, (formerly "SWEB") and Virgin Home. Following the merger with SEEBOARD Energy, (formerly "SEEBOARD") we has appointed in February 2003 to the role of Strategy and Business Planning Manager for EDF ENERGY - Customers Branch .
On March 1, 2004, Dimos was appointed Innovations Manager for the EDF Group (parent company of EDF Energy) and moved to Paris, France.
In October 2006, Dimos was appointed Strategy Consultant to the CEO of
Public Power Company SA (PPC) in Athens,
Greece and returned to "homeland" after 15 years of studying and working abroad.
In March 2010, Dimos was appointed Director of Planning and Performance for Public Power Company SA (PPC) leading a team of 35 in 5-year Business Planning, Annual Budgeting, Cash Flow planning, Financial and Managerial Reporting.
An avid traveller, Dimos's has explored Asia, Latin America and Africa.
During his military service (1996-98), he instigated the creation of the American Alumni Association of Northern Greece.
He led the creation of the Warwick Business School Alumni Club in Greece.
Dimos's name day is on April 10 (commemorative day for Orthodox Christian Martyr Dimo).
